Waypoint 6.1.0 Released

Waypoint 6.1.0 has been released and contains the following new features and fixes:

New Features:

  • Import/Export CSV format
    • This uses the Garmin CSV file format: longitude, latitude, name
  • Obtain location from Network Provider
    • This allows your device to quickly obtain a location until a GPS lock can be made.  This usually is less accurate, however improves the time to obtain a good lock on your location. A new field has been added to the Current Location table which will display the provider of the current location.
  • Provide warnings when saving or selecting a waypoint with poor accuracy
    • This is a reminder that the location saved or selected is not very accurate and should taken into consideration attempting to navigate to the selected waypoint
  • Import into Existing Category
    • This feature allows to you import waypoints into an existing category rather than creating a new category for each import
Fixed:
  • Fixed the marker size in the Save Waypoint and Color Options dialog
  • Resolved an issue with the Proximity Alert
  • Fixed an issue in the Set Waypoint dialog to allow the entered coordinates to be converted between Degrees, Minutes, and Seconds

    1. Hi Vinoth,

Yes, waypoints can be export to several formats: GPX, KML, and CSV. This can be done as follows:

      1) Select your device's menu button or the Menu overflow icon.
      2) Select the Export Waypoints menu option
      3) Then select the export format.

The file will be created in the waypoint data directory and you will be provided several options to either email or send the file to your Google drive to make it easy to access the file from another device.

    1. Hi Dan,

You can tweet your location as often as you like, however this is a manual process and not automatic.

    1. @ Anonymous,

Yes, even if your device doesn't have a removal SD Card you can still import waypoints to Waypoint Pro. In this case your device probably has an emulated SD Card on the device's main storage, this is the case for devices such as the Nexus 7 and some Samsung devices. There are a couple of options you have in this case.

      1) Connect your device to your computer and mount the device's storage so you can directly copy a CSV, GPX, or KML file to the waypoint directory.

      2) Email the CSV, GPX, or KML file and download it to your device. Then use a file explorer app to move the file to the waypoint directory.

The waypoint directory will be created on the emulated SD Card of device's main storage.

The format of the file to import can be CSV, GPX, or KML. When using CSV the format is longitude, latitude, name.

    2. Droid Ultra (Moto) does not seem to have addessible an emulated SD location. I have emailed GPX file and saved it but it still does not show in the list of available imports, any suggestions?

    3. Can you be more specific please? "waypoint directory" is so ambiguous. Do we need to make the directory? I don't see any folders on my SD card even related to Waypoint Pro.

    1. Hi,

There is no way to select multiple waypoints from the same category and delete them all at once at this time. However, you can delete the whole category which will delete all waypoints belonging to that category.

    1. Hi Drexl,

There is a Waypoint Help Section on the blog that gives an overview of the controls. This information is slightly out of date as the UI has been updated, though the concept is the same. There is a button bar across the bottom of the application that has controls for saving, selecting, and clearing waypoints as well as selecting and creating categories. Once the application is started it will try to acquire your location, once it has a lock on your location you can use the save button to save the waypoint. There is also an action bar across the top of the application that allows to map the waypoint on Google Maps: "Navigate", plot the waypoints/track/route on a map: "Plotter", use a radar view to view the selected waypoint: "Radar", or switch to a compass: "Compass". Please let me know if you have any other questions.

    1. Hi Richard,

I haven't been able to recreate this behavior. Please email me at thedroiddev@gmail.com so we can discuss the issue further.

    2. I'm having the exact same issue as Richard. Google maps/navigate recognizes the file, as the error message appears as follows:

      No results for 44.47075, -94.73231 (07MN038)

07MN038 being the location name assigned in the GPX file.

    3. Hi Joel,

Thanks for providing some test coordinates, however after looking into this further it appears this caused by a change in the Google Maps application. I see this is working with Google Maps version 6.3.0, however with Google Maps version 7.0.2 it is not. In the newer version it doesn't appear to like the search string with "(name)" so removing this from the search will find a location however from my testing it seems Google tries to find the closest routable address. For example with the coordinates you provided, using Waypoint's Plotter (which is using Google's Maps API) the point appears to be in the wooded area, however when using Google Maps and removing the name, the coordinates are plotted on the road 610th Ave. For some additional testing I took a point marked off the coast and tried searching for it in Google Maps and it will not find it. It appears Google is trying to tightly integrate searching for a point in the Maps app with the Google Navigate App so that you can get directions to the location you searched. I see that Google Earth will plot the point without issue, so if you know the point is "off the grid" select to complete the action with the Google Earth app, obviously directions will not be available when doing this. I will also look at changing the search string so that it is working with Google Maps for locations that can be located "on the grid".

    4. Hi All,

I see the search for a waypoint in Google Maps has been corrected in the Google Maps application with version 7.1.0. It appears they are still marking a spot to closest routable address, so it is recommended to only map the location in Google Maps if you want driving directions to the location. If you want to see the exact location on a map use the Plotter feature or select to complete the Navigate feature with Google Earth.

    1. Hi,

Waypoint Pro does save all the information you are interested in for each waypoint. The only thing it does not do, is auto save your location in intervals. I have this on a back log of items that I would like to implement so the feature may become available in a future release.
